Small Talk
Wishne's SafeVision® eyes factory workers
as market
Ron Janecke
It certainly is possible that there would be fewer
accidents in factories if workers' eyes were fully protected
by safety glasses.
With this as one of its main goals, Joel Wishne started a
company in April 2000 called SafeVision®, which provides
professional eyecare and glasses at reduced costs with
factories as the primary targets.
In his relatively short time in business, Wishne has found
that not only are there factory workers who could or should be
wearing safety glasses, but also that many workers haven't
even had eye exams for several years.
Wishne, an accountant whose previous experience included
working for Rubin Brown Gornstein, started SafeVision® by
lining up a Provider Network of independent optometrists/
ophthalmologists scattered throughout Missouri and southern
Illinois.
When a company signs up for SafeVision®, employees get an
eye exam and select their frames at the doctor's office. The
completed glasses are shipped to the doctor's office.
It takes less than a week for the glasses to be delivered,
some within two or three days.
Two membership cards are issued, one for the employee and
the other for his/her spouse and their children. The card
entitles other family members to get glasses at reduced costs.
Some companies have cut back their employee benefit
packages during the slump in the economy, with only about 20
percent of firms now offering vision insurance. While
emphasizing that SafeVision® is not an insurance plan, Wishne
said the plan does give family members discounted prices on
dress glasses. About 22 percent of those with SafeVision®
also get dress glasses for themselves or a family member.
The company has local and national customers, including
such large companies as Hussmann Corp., Federal Mogul and
Frito-Lay. One of its customers is a factory in rural Missouri
which employs 500, where a doctor goes onsite to conduct exams
and fit the safety glasses. SafeVision® will work with any
size company, but the average size of its customers are those
with 200-500 workers.
Sales are in the mid-six figures, according to Wishne, who
hopes to double that within the next two years.
