MID INDEX CLEAR GLASS
Your basic clear glass lens is
called Mid Index Crown Glass. It is ideal for people with
low prescriptions to +/- 3 diopters combined sph & cyl.
HIGH INDEX 1.60, 1.70, 1.80
Hi Index allows for the thinnest and lightest lenses with the
most precise optics as well. The lenses are flatter and
thinner at the edges, and eliminates peripheral distortion and improves
your vision. Another cosmetic advantage is they make your eyes
look more natural. High "Plus" prescriptions tend to make your
eyes look bigger, and High "Minus" lenses make your eyes look smaller.
Hi Index lenses reduce these properties caused by your high
prescriptions.
High Index 1.60 is recommended for prescriptions higher than a
combined +/- 3 diopters combined sph & cyl.
High Index 1.70 or 1.80 is recommended for very high
prescriptions, usually for over +/- 6 diopters combined sph &
cyl.
TINTED GLASS (Fixed)
These lenses are called fixed tint lenses because the color tint is
made within & throughout the lens material. This is
different (and better) than exterior tinting via dipping or
dyeing. Consequently, fixed tint
lens materials maintain their original color and light absorbing
properties for the life of the lens. In addition, the exact
absorption characteristics of the lens materials are precision
controlled at the factory, not by a dip-dying process, and do not change
over time.
Fixed tints are denoted by a darkness shade of
#1 or #3.
#1 is a light tint, about 15% darkness, for a slight cosmetic appearance. #1 tint is not too dark for
night activities, including driving at night.
#3 is a dark sunglass tint, to be worn as a sunglass only.
PHOTOCHROMATIC GLASS
As the name implies, these lenses are photochromatic (darken or lighten
in color automatically based on the sun's brightness). Many
people are familiar with photochromatics in plastic lenses with
most popular brands being Transitions™
& Sun Sensor™.
The brand names for glass are
Photogrey Extra (PGX) or
Photobrown Extra (PBX). PGX & PBX
are available in mid index or thinner, flatter 1.60 hi index glass
lenses.
PHOTOGREY THIN &
DARK GLASS™
(Mid Index)
Corning Thin and Dark
glass lenses are photochromic (darken automatically based on the sun's
brightness when outdoors). They get darker in warm temperatures
than Transitions (plastic). Being glass lenses, they are much more
scratch resistant than Transitions. Thin & Dark lenses are made
from a patented process from the Corning Company that allows them to be
ground to a very thin target 1.5 mm center thickness, yielding a lens that is up
to 30% lighter and thinner than standard glass.
POLARIZED SUNGLASSES
Available in mid index or 1.60 hi index
glass
Polarized glass lenses offer tremendous advantages to the user, and they
are the premium sunglass lens. In addition to blocking 99% of the
suns damaging UV400 rays, they also block glare for better vision and
less eye strain & fatigue.
Driving fatigue is reduced--Much of
the light reflected from large pavement is polarized, so people who do a
lot of daytime driving will benefit from polarizing lenses.
Fishing and other outdoor water activities enhanced--Light
reflected from the surface of the water prevent the viewer from seeing
below the surface. Polarized lenses not only eliminate this glare, but
enables the wearer to see below the surface as well. Also, sand at the
beach is a source of this same glare.
Snow is very reflective--People who are out working or driving in
the snow will see the benefit from using polarized lenses.
A polarized lens is a true optical filter which only allows the useful
light traveling from the object viewed to reach the eye, while blocking
all the glare caused by the scattered light
traveling in many different random directions. When objects are viewed
through a polarized lens, they appear sharper. Colors are seen more
vividly and in true natural proportion, due to the removal of the
scattered white light. When the glare is eliminated, the eyes don't have
to work as hard or squint to see. This reduces eye strain. The result is
a sunglass which actually is soothing to the eyes.
Simply put, Polarized lenses offer visual acuity & comfort
unavailable in any other sunglass.
